How long does a Respirator Mask Fit Test take?
The time it takes to conduct a proper Respirator Fit Test under the CSA standards Z94.4-02 is approx. and hour. The actual test itself is conducted in just a few minutes. However, depending on the knowledge base of the one requiring the fit test, the narrative section/ training under the standards will take 30 to 45 minutes to deliver and answer any questions that may arise. The Information and Training are one of the 2 key elements to a successful Respirator Mask Fit Test. Especially for N95 cloth respirators
Instructional Training Narrative
The Instructional Training Narrative is delivered to every person at the same time, in a group setting. Therefore a group of 10 people can be fit tested in approx. 2 hours. Group sizes can be from 2 people and as many as 50. 1 respirator or 2, half face and or a N95, the Instructional Training Narrative time frame is based on those guild lines. if more information is required as per the requested respirators to be tested, times can increase.
Procedures for Conducting a Respirator Fit Test
Following the CSA Standard Z94.4-02 your workers will go through a instructional safety orientation in a group environment. Several important items will be conveyed to workers increasing their knowledge and training. Covered in this part of our service are detailed instructional on how to disassemble, clean and reassemble their respirators. The nature of most substances encountered in a workplace hence the reason why respirators are required is a must know subject. In addition to that, information of different HEPA filters and other cartridges along with storage and daily care is conveyed. Please see the form below for a greater illustration of information instructed during the process.
Pricing
Unfortunately, because our leaders have allowed prices of everything to virtually double in the past few years, we can no longer absorb the increased cost of our supplies and especially fuel price. Therefore, individuals and small groups up to 4 people will cost $50 per person. Larger groups over 10 will receive our structured price of $35 each. As we're a mobile service, distance and the price of fuel does influence our pricing as well.
(some restrictions apply).
Fit Test Form
We use our own Fit Test Form to document every aspect of a fit test as per the CSA Standard Z94.4-02. There's a lot more to it than just making sure a Face to Respirator Seal has been achieved. Anybody who is required to donn (to wear) a respirator must follow specific procedures in addition to all the legal requirements as per the safety governing body of the geographical location they are working in. These requirements are instructed to every person who requests Fit Testing. The Instructional Orientation is mandated by the CSA Standard Z94.4-02. Conducted verbally by a Professional Certified Respirator Fit Tester, each person during the I.O. fills out a Fit Test Form.
New Fit Test Form
The Qualitative Respirator Fit test Form for Workers has been revised for June 1st, 2022 and is under Revision IV. Additional areas we'll be covering in more detail during our testing procedures is the different Filter Cartridges and for companies to implement a Filter Exchange Program. This way a company can track the number of times a worker changes out their respirator filters.
Fit Testing Expertise, CSA Z94.4-02 Standard
Coming from a Masonry background back in the 80s and early 90s, wearing a respirator and following the CSA Z94.4-02 Standard was never part of the training. Neither was using Fit Testing Services. Besides, Silica Dust wasn't a topic we even talked about. It wasn't till later in my masonry career I learned the truth from a WorkSafe BC Occupational Safety Officer. Now as a 3M Certified Qualitative Respirator Fit Tester the knowledge obtained is passed on in addition to the criteria CSA Z94.4-02 Standard.
What FreeBird is Doing to Help
To minimize the risk to the medical staff of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley, and the outskirt areas, they have requested FreeBird Safety Services to conduct a Fit Test on the respirators they have been using. It was an honor and a privilege to be asked to protect the healers who protect the population. For the medical personnel who find themselves here with questions, please download this Pdf Document I have generated on March 26, 2020.
Professional Respirator Mask Fit Testing
Professional Respirator Mask Fit Test is a must for all workers who are required to wear a respirator. A Qualitative Respirator Fit Test ensures a face-to-mask seal has been achieved. - Differences in HEPA Filters, Cartridges, and differences in Brands
- Complete respirator disassembling
- Cleaning
- Reassembling
- Self-checks
- Storage and Care
- Nature of the substance they are working with
- Decontamination

Since VeriFit Irritant Smoke will be used while conducting fit tests, accordingly each test procedure takes about 15 minutes per worker. On condition that workers pass, each will receive a laminated wallet card, a copy of the test, and a double Ziplock storage bag. In addition, each worker will also receive 2 types of cleaning towels, a couple of hard hat stickers, and this company's business card. Respirator Mask Fit Test 101 Certifications have a maximum duration of 1 year. Furthermore, within that 1 year, if a facial change occurs, a new test will need to be conducted.

You should always Pre-Check your respirator prior to donning (to put on or to wear). At some point during your work career, a Government Safety Officer or Hygienist may ask the question, "Can you prove that you actually did conduct a Pre-Check"? Then you can answer with confidence "Yes I can, here is my Pre-Check form all filled out". CYA 100% of the time. It's your health and your life.

Pricing Restrictions
As much as we dislike it, we can no longer charge $35.00 for a single individual Respirator Fit Test. As we have all seen, prices have increased on everything. Fuel has increased to almost $2.00 a liter is most metropolitan areas. Coupled with price increases for printer ink, paper, certification cards, and lamination skins as well as the product we use for the testing, we are unable to absorb these costs. We deeply apologize but our pricing structure needs to change to survive
The $35 per person rate will stand with the restriction of the following criteria.
- Groups of 10 or more people and
- Within the Metro Vancouver / Fraser Valley areas.
Single individuals up to 4 people our rates must be increased to $50.00 per person within the previously mentioned areas. Outside these areas and a additional mileage charge could be added. However, since we are a mobile service as of late due to COVID-19, meeting at a location with in an half way point is a practice we have come to appreciate.
For groups of 6 to 9 people the costs drops to $42.50 to $45.00 (driving distance applies) per worker per respirator
FreeBird Safety Services deeply apologizes for the increase in our rates, yet unlike other services in retail and commercial personal services, we are not and never will charge just for showing up in addition to the regular rates. That practice is against the moral and ethical standards of this company. However, cancelation on arrival or with in 2 hours of the scheduled appointment, a service fee of $75.00 will be charged (open for discussion on excuse of cancelation)
