15 roadside workers killed; hundreds injured over 10 years: WorkSafe BC

From the CBC May 15, 2017

About half of those injured are traffic control or flag persons, the agency says new data from WorkSafe BC shows over the past decade,15 roadside workers have died and 229 have been injured after they were hit by vehicles while on the job. The agency says 66 percent of those workers were in construction, including 124 who worked in traffic control or as flag persons. Last year, one worker died and 21 others were injured at worksites across B.C.  The new statistics from WorkSafe BC come as the agency kicks off an annual safety campaign aimed at protecting roadside workers.

Just imagine, lights of a TCP / flaggers hard hat might have prevented those that were hit at night.

Working at night

Working at night has always been very hazardous. Especially for a TCP (traffic control person). Hard hat lights would help. White & Amber LEDs Visible 360° from 100s of meters away. One such industry that’s a very high hazard at night is “Road Construction”. For that manner, any work at night on the main traffic roadways and Highways increases the hazard rating 10-fold. The reason being is even with High Visual clothing a worker isn't seen until a light source is directed towards them.

Vehicle Lighting

In addition, some vehicles have less than bright headlights, or one of the lights burnt out compounding the hazard rating even more. WorkSafe BC Statistics state, in 2018 two roadside workers died as a result of being hit by a motor vehicle, and another 29 were injured. Between 2009 and 2018, 13 roadside workers were killed and 213 were injured under similar circumstances.

Hard to see at Night

A point often overlooked is workers who are on the ground need to stand out more throughout the entire work area. During nighttime shift work, most if not all portable light sources are pointed at the area where a specific task is being performed. Therefore, if a worker needs to leave that area or the TCPs (traffic console persons) who flag vehicles are working in the dark. Minors lights or Headlamps are too directional. Workers are still not seen from the opposite direction because these lamps only point one way. In the case of TCPs, the only light source is their wand, the output is only 15 to 25 lumen light.

What the Competition offers

Different by comparison than any other lighting system for Hard Hats. Every other light for a hard hat has issues. Another style of light incorporates over half a pound of materials in a design that circles the entire outer circumference of a hard hat. Unfortunately, the profile of this unit sits up and slickly away from a hard hat, mounted so it extends past the brim. Despite the fact it is a part of the PPE family, a few hazards and differences become evident.

Their Pros and Cons

  1. In a high wind location, because of the surface area of this device, the wind can catch it ripping your hard hat from your head.
  2. By the same token, the profile of this other device sits in such a way that it could get caught on objects in a semi-tight area. Once again ripping it and your hard hat off your head.
  3. Only has one 18650 lithium-ion battery that lasts a max of 5.5 hours in full use at night.
  4. 2 packs of extra batteries cost an additional $25.00
  5. pack of 20 cost $239.99,
  6. 2 battery chargers an extra $25.00
  7. On a regular cap style hard hat, it extends past the sides and back by quite a bit.
  8. The pictures showed that they don't use a hard hat with a rain channel around the brim.

Other options would only be a miner's light which is only a single directional light. Not visible from a 360° radius.

Being Seen While Working

Traffic is just one high hazard while working at night. Protect yourself with the SEEME-NOW * LED Hard Hat Safety Lights. Within your own work zone, mobile equipment is in full operation. Dump Trucks pulling in and backing up, excavators digging and swinging, plus front-end loaders and skid steers running around your site. Wearing hard hat lights dramatically increases your visibility and decreases the hazards. The SEEME-NOW * LED Hard Hat Safety Lights, has White & Amber LEDs that allows you to be visible from 360° from 100s of meters away.

The SEEME-NOW Hard Hat Comparisons

Unlike the other styles, this brand, SEEME-NOW * LED Hard Hat Safety Lights, weighs less than a few quarters. In addition to it sitting completely flush to a hard hat, it connects to a battery pack on the back-increasing task lighting time by double. The circle structured competitions light fully light up only lasts for 5.5 hours. Whereas the SEEME-NOW * LED Hard Hat Safety Lights can last upwards of 10 to 12 hours. This is a crucial point. A worker who is working at night needs a light. What if it shuts off due to power right in the middle of a cut with a circular saw? Yet like this other, it's PPE that's Visible 360° from 500 meters.

  1. I have a daughter that’s works as a flagger, traffic control person. I don’t know how many times she’s told me about almost getting hit by cars and trucks at night while flagging. This product you have is by far the best I’ve seen on the market to date. All the rest are just head lamp minors lights. Except for that one in the states that looks like a big piece of medal attached to a hardhat. Yours looks light weight and low profile. I’m going to buy one for my little girl. Those flaggers need all the lighting they can get. Thanks brother for making these.

    • Thank you very much. That’s exactly who I designed these for. Flaggers or TCPs, and construction road workers at night, and even tow truck drivers who have a job to do after dusk. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to send me a message.
